George Clooney looks set to star in a movie about the US government’s efforts to chase down artwork stolen by the Nazis.

The actor – who is generating Oscar buzz for his turn in The Descendants – will also co-write and direct The Monuments Men, TheWrap.com reports.

Speaking at the Palm Springs Film Festival, Clooney said: “I’m excited about it. It’s a fun movie because it could be big entertainment.”

The 50-year-old also revealed it will be a “big budget” project.

“You can’t do it small – it’s landing in Normandy,” he said.

The movie will be based on Robert M Edsel’s book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, And The Greatest Treasure Hunt In History, which follows a group of art experts – the Monuments Men – who are chosen to seek out artwork pilfered during World War II.

Clooney has enjoyed success with his previous directorial efforts. His 2005 film Good Night, And Good Luck was nominated for a raft of awards and he is up for a Golden Globe for his latest movie, political drama thriller The Ides Of March.

George Clooney – George Clooney To Take On Nazi Art Thieves In World War Ii Movie

George Clooney is set to take on the Nazis in a new movie about the art experts who rescued masterpieces stolen by Adolf Hitler in World War II.

The Hollywood actor will co-write, direct and star in The Monuments Men, about a group of art historians and curators who were picked by the U.S. government to retrieve pieces looted from European museums by Nazi thieves.

Clooney has yet to decide which role will be his – but he insists it will be a “fun” project because he’s got a big budget to spend on the shoot.

He says, “Hitler was an art fanatic, and he stashed masterpieces everywhere. He hid 27 Rembrandts in a coffin… I’m excited about it. It’s a fun movie because it could be big entertainment. It’s a big budget, you can’t do it small – it’s landing in Normandy.

“I’m not opposed to doing a commercial film, I’m just opposed to doing a commercial film that doesn’t feel organic to me. So if we’re going to do a commercial film we thought, ‘Let’s do something that seems fun and actually have something to say.’”

Clooney’s movie is based on the book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel.

George Clooney’s next project will be The Monuments Men, a big budget film about art and war, which he will co-write, direct and star in, the actor revealed at the Palm Springs Film Festival on January 7, where he accepted an award for The Ides of March and The Descendants.

Monuments is a suspense during World War II, following a group of art experts, museum directors, curators and historians who scoured Europe retrieving artworks confiscated by Nazis.

Based on the book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History, by Robert M. Edsel, the book follows the unarmed operation behind enemy lines.

“I’m not opposed to doing a commercial film, I’m just opposed to doing a commercial film that doesn’t feel organic to me,” Clooney told Hollywood website The Wrap. “We thought, ‘Let’s do something that seems fun and actually have something to say.’”

Clooney will co-write the screenplay with producer Grant Heslov, who he teamed up with for other social/political-themed films, including Ides of March, Good Night and Good Luck, and Men Who Stare at Goats, a caper about the US military in the Middle East.

The Oscar winner tells me he’s adapting a book called The Monuments Men for the big screen.

Based on a true story, The Monuments Men follows a group of art experts shortly after World War II who are on the hunt for art stolen by the Nazis.

“We’re working on the screenplay right now,” Clooney told me last night at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. “I’m really interested in telling the story of how these very unlikely heroes went miles deep into a mine and found all the art and returned it.”

The actor is expected to also star in the big-budget flick, according to The Wrap.

Clooney also said Hitler will not appear in the film. “Who wants to see Hitler?” he said. “And who really wants to play Hitler?”

Clooney was at the film fest to pick up The Chairman’s Award. Girlfriend Stacy Keibler was by his side.

“You just try to make movies that people like and then maybe once every couple of years, they like them and the next couple of years they don’t,” Clooney said. “You sort of vacillate between having a good year and not. So this is nice. This is a fun year.”

And I’ll have more from Clooney and Keilber later on. Make sure to come back here for the scoop.

Clooney is writing the project with producing partner Grant Heslov, who also helped pen the scripts for Good Night, and Good Luck, and The Ides of March. Other than Clooney, there is no cast yet in place.
